Connectivity Issues

If you receive the message There is no DNS entry for http://www.yourdomain.com , there are several possible explanations:

1. Try to access your website using the IP address. If this works, the domain name is either not active or has not yet propagated through the Internet.

  • New Domain - It generally takes 48-72 hours for a domain name to be released by InterNIC and propagated to DNS's (Domain Name Servers) throughout the Internet.
  • Older Domains - If it is an older domain that has previously worked, the name may be on hold with InterNIC. Contact your domain registrar directly to determine the reason that the name is on hold.

You can check the status of your domain name by looking in the Whois database.

2. If you can reach the site with the IP address and you know it has been more than 72 hours since the name was released by your domain registrar:

3. Clear your Browser Cache

  • Netscape
Select Options > Network Preferences > Cache Tab > Click on the buttons Clear Memory Cache Now and Clear Disk Cache Now and OK > Click Reload.
  • Internet Explorer
Select Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files > Check Delete all offline content > Click OK > Click Settings button > Click View Files > Highlight one file and click ctrl+A on the key board and then hit the delete key > Click OK until you are out of the program.

4. If you know that others are able to reach the website with the domain name but you can't, contact your local ISP . They may not have updated their DNS records.

5. If you are still unable to reach the website, contact a Customer Service Agent for assistance.

6. If you are unable to reach the website with either the domain name or the IP address you may be experiencing a connectivity problem.

In order to troubleshoot connectivity problems you need to run a "traceroute". Then cut and paste the results that you get into a technical support request (see cut & paste instructions at the bottom of this page).

  • Windows 95/98/NT, click Start, Programs and then MSDOS Prompt. At the prompt, type "tracert www.yourdomain.com".
  • Windows 2000, open a command prompt and type "tracert www.yourdomain.com".
  • Macintosh, you need to download a program to do the traceroute. We suggest IP Net Monito
